Gorgeous kettle
I feel compelled to leave a review. I bought this exact kettle here for $97 in 2013. It’s a beautiful kettle and has functioned very well for our family. It heats up quickly; pours nicely. Holds 2 full quarts with room to spare. My husband heats water in it for tea multiple times per day.The only downside is that the stainless steel doesn’t hide anything. We keep it on the stovetop, and it gets some splatters and grease from cooking. I’ve typically cleaned it with baking soda and elbow grease once a year or so. I guess I’ve dropped the ball lately because it had turned a splotchy brown, seemed impossible to get clean, and I’d decided it was time to give up and replace it.After shopping for a while, I realized that there just aren’t other stovetop kettles of any shape or color as attractive as this one. So... I spent about an hour, half a box of baking soda, and most of a magic eraser getting it looking shiny and silvery again. It doesn’t exactly look new, but it’s beautiful once more. I'm happy to say that the brushed steel can take a good bit of aggressive scrubbing and still look great. This is a gorgeous, very functional kettle. I hope it lasts us another 10 years!

I read many reviews before I bought this, including some criticisms, and, after using mine for a month I would like to share my own impressions. For openers, this kettle is obviously made in Japan, in the long Japanese tradition of artisan manufacturing. Materials and workmanship could not be better. I use a natural gas stove, and this kettle heats water very quickly, giving off a geyser of steam from the spout when the water boils. The handles are similar to old Bakelite, like those used on old Revere Ware pots we still use every day. The handle does get pretty warm by the time a lot of water boils, but it does not seem uncomfortably hot to me. The lid fits well enough, but there is no detente to keep it in place.when the kettle is tipped for pouring. While I suppose one could make it a two-handed affair, I have no trouble extending one finger to keep the lid in place when I pour, just as I do with my old, Brown Betty teapot. I saw one review that claims the handle melted and the knob on the lid broke. I can see where the handle might be damaged if it was placed and left in its down position over a leaping flame, and I imagine the knob on the lid might well break if it was dropped onto a tile floor. Likewise, the kettle might suffer damage if it was left to cook itself dry. I also read that boiling water surges from the kettle when pouring, and, indeed, the heated spout ensures water will sputter if the kettle is removed from the flame and water is poured immediately,, in one swoop. I just slow down a trifle, and I have no problems with it. As for cracks, seams, or rust, I've seen none of this, and the water where I live is hard, even fairly caustic. I don't often leave water in the kettle, and I don't brew tea in the kettle (that's what the pot is for...). All in all, I recommend this teakettle to anyone who likes the look of it. It is, indeed, a work of art that I enjoy using every day.

This is a great tea kettle. It is not extremely heavy, but the steel is a nice thickness. The lid does not stick. The handle does not get too hot and you don’t need a pot holder when pouring. One review said the water splats out dangerously but I did not find that to be the case. Looks nice too.

Bought it in March of 2014 to replace a kettle that started leaking at the base. This kettle doesn’t have a seam at the base. The vessel body is one piece. This is a simple Japanese-made stovetop tea kettle. It gets used regularly and I leave water in it. It works well and looks like it belongs on my stove. I would buy it again if I ever needed it but I don’t expect to need a new one.

This is a poorly made item; the design is original, no doubt about it but the material covering the handle is of low quality, cheap plastic. The handle burns at the touch and already emanating plastic fumes. Probably better to buy it in Japan; quite disapponting.

This kettle is so much nicer in person than in the picture. It appears to be hand brushed (I bought the matte, not the mirror) and the design is the nicest I've ever seen in a kettle. You can feel the quality as much as you can see it. The handle fits the hand nicely and makes pouring easy. Well balanced. For someone with arthritis, this is really important to me. The top has a nice large opening for easy filling and cleaning, and the lid comes off easily - without that hard tug that sometimes is needed when a lid fits just a tad too tightly. My only disappointment is with the size. I wish it held more water. It is enough for a cup or two of tea, unless you fill it beyond the bottom of the spout. The up side to this, however, is that it does not dominate the stove top. I like my tea kettle to be as much a decorative feature on the stove as a functional piece for easy water boiling. This one is both. I would recommend this kettle to anyone looking for quality, great design, easy pour and cleaning, without a need for a high volume of water at any given time. I love it. Worth every penny. [By the way, I expected delivery to take at least a few weeks, but it came in under a week. Also, if you don't read Japanese, you better know how to use and clean a kettle. Every word in the accompanying literature is written in Japanese without any translation.]
P.S. I also have an Oxo stainless steel kettle which looks fine and gets the job done (and has a whistle, if that matters to you) - but the appearance and quality award goes to the kettle I am reviewing here.

Yes...Sori Yanagi is a national treasure in Japan. No...no one here in the USA has ever heard his name. So, it's up to me! The tea kettle is brilliant. It is also beautiful. Nice combo. Basic comments: 1. It is MUCH more burnished looking than the photo, which makes one think it is matte grey. It is not. It's between a mirror polish and matte. Just perfect for real use. 2. It is heavy gauge steel. Some comments make one think it is thin. It is not. They must be used to cast iron to call this thin. Looking at it, it is graceful. Picking it up, it is solid and just exudes caring craftsmanship. Don't like "Made in China"? You'll be thrilled with "Crafted in Japan". 3. There's nothing to break or fall off...good. 4. The lid! That brilliant super wide, whole hand plus a soapy sponge can fit inside with ease lid. 5. It does not whistle. Thank you. You actually have to pay attention to a boiling kettle on your stove. Good idea, right? 6. The kettle is one piece plus spout...no bottom seams...totally flat bottom...ideal for glass/ceramic cook tops. And, yeah, coils, gas, campfires, whatever. 7. I read one review complaining about the lid falling off while pouring. Seriously? Got a good laugh there. Gravity works! Stick your middle finger down while pouring if you think it's gonna take the plunge. <Insert eye rolling emoticon here.> 8. I'm only writing this because I love this thing...and it's expensive. Maybe not to some, but to me, yes. I mean, I could boil water in a number ten tin can...but this kettle makes me happy, warm and serene. It's easily worth the cost. BTW: ALWAYS start out with cold water and use only medium-high heat. So long, and thanks for your support. (send tea)
