About the Author

Charlotte, Emily, and Anne Brontë were born in Yorkshire between 1816 and 1820. They wrote and shared stories from a young age, and in 1847, Charlotte’s Jane Eyre and Emily’s Wuthering Heights were both published. All three also worked as governesses and teachers, experiences that inspired Anne’s The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (1848) and Charlotte’s Villette (1853). They died in their twenties and thirties, leaving their father the only surviving family member.

Coralie Bickford-Smith (cover design) is an award-winning designer at Penguin Books (U.K.), where she has created several highly acclaimed series designs. She is also the author of The Fox and the Star, the 2015 Waterstones Book of the Year. She studied typography at Reading University and lives in London.

Charlotte Brontë was born at Thornton, Yorkshire in 1816, the third child of Patrick and Maria Brontë. Her father was perpetual curate of Haworth, Yorkshire from 1820 until his death in 1861. Her mother died in 1821, leaving five daughters and a son. Charlotte was employed as a teacher from 1835 to 1838, was subsequently a governess, and in 1842 went with her sister Emily to study languages in Brussels, where during 1843 she again worked as a teacher. Charlotte’s first novel, The Professor, was rejected by several publishers and was not published until 1857. Jane Eyre was published in 1847 and achieved immediate success. In 1848 Branwell Brontë died, as did Emily before the end of the same year, and Anne in the following summer, so that Charlotte alone survived of the six children. Charlotte married in 1854 the Revd A. B Nicholls, her father’s curate, but died in March 1855.

Perfect for gifting. I love it. No damages and all

You miss out with this set on Charlotte's The Professor and her Shirley novels, not to mention the delightful Agnes Grey by little sis Anne. But the novels you get are the four best novels by those "weird sisters," as Ted Hughes called them. I collect Bronte novels and these are among my favorites of modern printings. The slipcover case is a nice touch, and the cover designs are unmatched. I've actually read the Wuthering Heights volume here (I've read all the novel, multiple times, but only WH from this set) and the type is set well, the spacing is just right, and the novel is as unique as it always has been. This is my second set of this collection to buy -- the price was super great and I'll give it as a gift on Christmas to a reader of the classics.

I am trying to collect most of the Penguin Clothbound Classics series of books. This is a beautiful set, and looks fabulous on my bookshelf. The cardboard case is sturdy and protects the books well. When you get several of these books on a shelf together, the colors look stunning! The books are well-made, and will last ages!

I had to get this collection even though I already owned several of the books in it. They were just to beautiful to pass on them. I don’t know if anybody else does this but I like to contemplate my books and the nicer they look on the outside the more encouraged I am on opening them up and actually reading them🤣

I purchased this set on sale during Black Friday but it did not disappoint. The pages are sewn in so you do not have to worry about pages falling out. The material of the book is a very durable hardcover. Plus the artwork on the cover is great, it goes perfectly with my classics collection. If you enjoy collecting classic novels, I would definitely recommend this set to you. The set that I received was legitimate and licensed by Penguins Classic, even though I cannot seem to find the set sold directly from them anymore.

5.0 out of 5 stars Für kein Geld ein Gesamtwerk
Reviewed in Germany on April 24, 2024
