- Abstract
Objective: To investigate the differences of auditory P50 sensory gating between first-episode and chronic schizophrenics. Methods: Totally 97 patients with first-episode schizophrenia, 197 patients with chronic schizophrenia, and 253 normal controls were recruited. P50 measurements of paired-clicks conditioning-testing paradigm were used to evaluate the sensory gating for all the participants. The P50 ratio was regarded as the primary outcome measure s. Results: The Sl latency and S2 latency were higher in patients with first-episode schizophrenia than in patients with chronic schizophrenia and normal controls (P s <0. 001) . The P50 ratios were lower in patients with first-episode schizophrenia and normal controls than in patients with chronic schizophrenia [ 0. 4( - 0. 4, 1. 7), 0. 4( - 0. 7, 2. 0) vs. 0. 6( - 2. 3, 4. 0), Ps < 0. 05]. The absolute differences bet wee n Sl amplitude and S2 amplitude we re smaller in patients with chronic schizophrenia than in patients with first -episode schizophrenia and normal controls [ 1. 2( - 3. 9, 9. 2) μV vs. 1. 7( - 1. 0, 6. 7) μV, 1. 9( - 2. 3, 8. 9) μV, Ps < 0. 01] . Conclusion: Compared with patients with first-episode schizophrenia, the deficits of P50 sensory gating may be severer in patients with chronic schizophrenia. The prolongation of Sl latency and S2 latency may be a compensatory mechanism of sensory gating in patients with first-episode schizophrenia.
